Automobile racing, commonly known as car racing, is a sporting event conducted all over the world. All the events with an automobile, whether it is professional or amateur, whether conducted on the roads or tracks, come under the category of car racing. There are so many different types of races around the world including rally car racing, speedway racing, etc., conducted by the local race councils of the respective places. There is also a ‘races and race cars’ governing body called FIA which controls all the race events that are conducted at both local and international level.

The History

The invention of the motor engine fueled by gasoline paved the way for the emergence of automobile racing. Even though the first organized race like event was conducted during 1894, there is so much evidence in history that can prove the existence of race events during the 1880s. France was known for the discovery of this new sports event called automobile racing because the first race event was held in the capital city of France. Even though the idea of race events was spread to the USA and to many other parts of the world, it became popular among the society only during the 1900s. Even though the accidents that occurred during the races reduced the fame of racing, it again got to the limelight during the 1950s.

The Beginning of Modern Race

The races that were conducted in the beginning stage was either to check the performance of the vehicles or to promote an event. The racing got its face only during 1903 when an event was conducted in New York which provided a memento to the winner. It was the beginning of the new era racing. After the New York event, several race clubs came into light and several events started to take place across the world. This trend also gave rise to the creation of race circuits in several cities exclusively for the purpose of conducting races. This period has also witnessed the emergence of many famous car races including the French Grand Prix.

Till the World War I, the races were conducted with the normal automobiles which were manufactured for normal use. After that period, the car manufacturers started building cars specialized for races with an alternative engine, bigger fuel tanks, and better tires. Even though it took a long time for the racing events to become popular, it is one of the most watched sports events in the 21st century.
